Nesting Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna

Location: Alum Rock Park, Santa Clara County, Calif.    Date: May 7, 2005

(Photographed from a foot bridge with a fairly constant stream of people traffic.)

"Nest: Site is variable, usually on branch of tree or shrub, sometimes in vines, on wires, under eaves. Usually 4-25 feet above ground, can be lower or higher. Nest (built by female alone) is cup of plant fibers and spider webs, lined with fine plant down and sometimes feathers, the outside camouflaged with lichens. Rather large for a hummingbird nest. Female may continue building after eggs are laid." [from Lives of North American Birds by Kenn Kaufman]
